Today Google celebrates Nanakusa no sekku or the Festival of Seven Herbs that includes Seri, Nazuna or Penpengusa, Hahakogusa, Hakobe, Koonitabirako, Kabu and Daikon. In the doodle, you will see a family enjoying their porridge together. The festival is a Japanese custom celebrated every seventh of January wherein people eat seven herb rice porridge.
If you are into porridge and just stick to the traditional flavors of choco and the like, then maybe it is time for you to try the seven herbs porridge. In other countries, porridge is savored with fish sauce and celery while other put in some chicken meat in it.
During the festival or the night before the festival, people will put their nanakusa, rice scoop, and wooden pestle on a cutting board and sing “Before the birds of the continent (China) fly to Japan, let’s get nanakusa” as they cut the herbs into pieces. The festival is a practiced by Japanese people since ages for longevity and health. With similarity to an ancient Chinese custom, the festival is developed in Japan and is held with the aim to ward off evil.
