Priscilla Dunstan, an Australian mom, shares her discovery to the world. Priscilla’s parents discovered she had a photographic memory for sound. At age 5, she could hear a Mozart concert on the piano and play it back note for note. She can hear patterns of sounds no one else can hear.

Priscilla Dunstan has a gift to listen and understand her baby, Tom. “Because of my gift for sound, I was able to pick out certain patterns in her infant cries and then remember what those patterns were later on when he cried again,” Priscilla says. “I realized that other babies were saying the same words.” She opened up the world everyone wants to hear.

Understand your infant cries:

neh (or nah) = (sucking motion) hungry ; baby needs to be fed
distinguish: n sound

owh = tired (yawn reflex, mouth is oval-shaped); baby needs to sleep

eh = (tighten chest) burp me; baby needs to be burped

eairh = (lower wind pain) more urgent R sound; needs some relief

heh = (air bubbles into the intestine) uncomfortable, hot, cold; nappy change, change position

TIPS:
It’s easy to hear the sounds when your baby is not crying so catch your baby before they get to the screaming part of their cry. You may hear more than 1sound. The trick is to listen to the most word used by the baby and act on it. Don’t worry if you don’t get it the first time. You can try the second time around.

Good thing I’ve heard about this video from Priscilla Dunstan when I gave birth. I came to know that infant cries have meaning. I listened carefully when my daughter cried. At first it was very hard to distinguish. But then, after concentrating and continuous practice, my daughter and I was really communicating.

Those “words” are actually sound reflexes. My baby was windy and colicky that’s why she always said “eh!” and “eairh!” It’s best to detect the sounds during the first few months, 0-3, months because if the baby realized that you don’t understand what he/she is telling you, he/she will eventually stop using those words. But when the baby feels that you’re responding, she will continue to use them.
