I didn’t go to college. Besides not having enough money to pay for tuition fees and transportation, I am very picky and have high standards when it comes to teachers or professors. I went to some short course institutions and guess what? Ninety percent of the time, I was disappointed and frustrated because most of the instructors there were uninspired and bookish.
Why not teach myself instead? I mean, I pay like $80 for a 24 to 48 hours session to learn Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint that I don’t even able to practice because I don’t own a computer. Why not invest on a computer and learn by myself through tutorials? I would have saved money and time going to and fro the institution.
One of my subjects during my short course is Computer Networking. I don’t know if I actually learned something from that institution. I had read tons of resources regarding networking and was able to make and pass our thesis and defense. But if it weren’t for practical application, which I learned only at home when boyfriend asked me to assist him in setting up their LAN and now Wi-fi connection, that’s the only time that I understood everything that’s written on those papers.
Boyfriend used to help his friend set up computer shops of acquaintances and he sometimes tagged me along. I learned how to use the crimping tool which I wasn’t taught in school. Now, that friend of his has CCNA Certification after attending some seminar or tutorial sessions. All his experiences, knowledge and passion contributed.
If it’s only certification that you need, why not just apply for something in the net. Anyway, almost everything can be found in the world wide web, even online schooling. Not that I’m against formal education, it’s just not everything can be learned in school.

Yes, I agree. Not everything can be learned in school. Especially nowadays when information is practically in the Internet already.
