Auzentech X-Fi Prelude 7.1 Sound Card Review

Tuesday Oct 28, 2008

The Auzen Prelude 7.1 Soundcard combines the best of both worlds: The X-Fi chip from Creative Labs and stable updated drivers from Auzentech. The Auzentech X-Fi Prelude 7.1 Sound Card is a no-nonsense, straightforward soundcard that delivers sound quality at par, if not better than the Creative X-fi series soundcard without the frills. One of the distinct features of the card is that it has a mic and headphone header on the PCB (printed circuit board) of the card which can be connected to the front panel of a case. Another neat feature is that you can replace the left and right channel ohms to better suit your needs, if necessary. The card also comes with an optical toslink cable which can be plugged into the optical in/out ports at the rear of the card.

Personally, I prefer this over the Creative Labs offerings mainly because of the drivers. The drivers of the Auzentech X-Fi Prelude 7.1 Sound Card are stripped down and straightforward, with constant updates for both Windows XP and Vista (32/64 bit). One downside is that it does not come with a 5.25 input/output bay, similar to the X-fi Platinum and X-fi Fatality Champion Series from Creative Labs. If you can do without the 5.25 input/output bay, this would be a better purchase as compared to the X-fi cards from Creative Labs.
