Affordable Protein Shake

Saturday Sep 27, 2008

Eating healthy doesn’t necessarily need to be expensive, you can have all the nutritional requirements you need for a day without breaking your budget. I’ll show you how to make an affordable protein shake for under 50 pesos a day.

First we get our whey powder. I personally buy the Gold Standard brand since I’ve been using it for years. Don’t bother buying this in the mall since the prices are steep; you’d rather acquire it online. I recently discovered Phil Supplements which sells the stuff I need at affordable prices… not to mention that they also deliver. I know what you may be thinking, is it authentic? Well, I personally have been using this for about 4 years now and I can say I have seen results. Also, there isn’t much a market for it locally to be bootlegged.

Your typical 10lbs bag of whey (at 155 servings) will cost anywhere from 4500 to 5000 pesos; that’s roughly 32.25 pesos per serving. The nutritional facts for this particular product can be seen on the bottom.

whey protein facts

Typically you’d just add water. But what I want to do is to add the following:

  • a banana
  • powdered milk
  • ice
  • oats (no cook)

A banana will set you back About 2-4 pesos depending on the size,  a block of ice will set you back about 2 pesos and a table spoon of oats will roughly cost 5 pesos (if you buy the big bag of Quaker Oats). So that brings the Total to approximately P43.25. We still haven’t included the milk which is optional if you’re lactose intolerant.

So instead of buying that 1.5Liter of coke at 38 pesos at your local sari-sari store, this would be a much healthier option. It’ll have great long term benefits especially if you work out.

This is true! And to add more, Though Whey has the highest biological value of any known protein, If it’s hard for you to get one.. you can just use eggs instead (raw eggs) This will serve as your protein. Just chuck ‘em in with fruits & veges like banana, apple, carrots, cauliflower, lemon (to preserve) and whatever fruits & veges you have in the fridge. And shake it! There you have a protein smoothie!!

Btw, you won’t taste the raw eggs, fruits such as banana, apple & the carrots will give you sweety taste of your smoothie..

This is what most of the young atheletes here esp my cousin have for their everyday protein. Cheap, affordable & easy to make. try it!!

yeah i used to use eggs as the bulk source of my protein but you need atleast 3 eggs to get the equivalent of 1 serving of whey. and it can be quite a chore separating the egg whites from the egg yolks :)
