My 2nd Dental Prophylaxis

Thursday Oct 22, 2009

I had my first Dental Prophylaxis last year, August 2008. The price will depend on how much “dirt”, meaning cavities and plaque are there in your teeth and gums. In the dental clinic we went to a year ago, the cost will start from Php 750, and since that was my first time to have my teeth and gums clean, it cost me Php1500 for it.

On my second dental prophylaxis, I went to another dental clinic, which is inside the mall. Surprisingly, the price was cheaper. Well, so I thought. They have a promo for Php1500, which includes:

  • complete oral prophylaxis
  • Stain removal
  • Sodium Bicarbonate
  • Flouride/Calcium
  • Tongue Cleaning

Unfortunately, they got short of the materials for tongue cleaning so they gave me a Zitrus mouthwash to compensate.

Oral Prophylaxis

First you will be asked to gargle using a mouthwash. Since it’s a complete oral cleaning, the dentist used a dental floss to remove extra food stuck in between my teeth. (I just ate lunch before going there. hehe)

A suction for the water and saliva will be placed inside your mouth. A tool which is like a small bent pointed stainless pen will be used to remove the plaque in between the teeth. It sounds like it’s drilling, but it’s only vibrating. They can also use a tool that looks like a small hook at the end to pick up the plaques manually.

You’ll find black hardened particles coming out. You’d think that those are part of your teeth. But they really were hardened plaques. Eew.. After the whole procedure, you’ll feel clean and fresh (aside from the stinging feeling). I don’t remember what kind of treatment the dentist did for stain removal.

Sodium Bicarbonate

A cotton with the solution of the sodium bicarbonate was brushed on my teeth back and forth. I swallowed some of it and the doctor said (with a little hesitation) it’s okay. It smelled like agua oxinada. You can do this at home too. Rub your teeth with baking soda for sparkling pearly whites.

Flouride/Calcium

After gargling again with mouthwash, a cotton with a toothpaste like thingy was swabbed onto my teeth back and forth until she finished all of it. You can only eat or drink 30 minutes after. You can either spit or swallow if you feel like doing so.

All in all, it was a fun and “stingy” experience. I had two teeth filled with paste as well. It cost Php500 per teeth, so I had to save up again for the 11 more teeth that need filling. Yikes.

it has been eons ago since i made a visit to the dentist. my dental check-up is long overdue pero di pa ako nakahanap ng dentist dito. ang hirap maghanap esp yung english speaking. at di ka basta-basta pdeng pumunta lang kahit saang clinic. you need to get an appointment first. and since i don’t have someone para mapag-iwanan kay sam, mas mahirap magpa appointment. hahai!!!
