Women in history have not always been as empowered as the women of today. They were restricted to the point of absurdity (at least to one’s modern mind), and there is one aspect that such restrictions are particularly evident: fashion. It is only late in the 20th century that women’s trousers are accepted in the mainstream, and even now there are reports of places in several parts of the world banning women from wearing them (or as reports say, “tight” trousers).

Mid 19th century, the issue is still shocking (or scandalizing, more aptly put) the Victorian society. This ridiculously unreasonable social prohibition was gladly put to end by André Courrèges, that revolutionary fashion designer who bravely put forward trousers as a must have item in women’s closets. Over time, skirts started inching higher up the legs, designer jeans for women became all the rage, the long sleeves gave way to the much more comfortable sleeveless dresses. While some cultures and religions still look down on how women’s clothing trends evolved to what they are today, it cannot be denied that together with the evolution of women’s clothing comes the liberation that has long been denied from them by members of the opposite sex.
