Translation Opps

Friday Feb 12, 2010

Most of the time that I ride the elevator going up or down the building, I bumped into people of different races. Bumping into a Chinese or an Indian is not much of a surprise. Two days ago a kid was talking inside the elevator and I just couldn’t decipher what she’s saying. I thought, maybe she still couldn’t speak fluently (she looked like 3 years old) although I heard her shouted, “stop!”

When the elderly around her talked to her, that’s the time I realized that she was talking in a different language. I heard the grandmother talked in Tagalog (Filipino) and so I asked her what language are they using. It’s German. My gawd. To think I’m using Google Translate for my job to translate some texts for my client and one of the languages I translate is German.

It came to me again how I wanted to learn different languages. I have started studying Japanese before (yea, I’ve told you that already) and now I’m getting curious about French and German languages. There are many translation jobs available in Odesk and on other sites which I think is a great online opportunity for us work at home moms.

My Japanese translator friend now earns about $1000 translating legal papers for a Japanese firm based here in the Philippines, where she used to earn half of the amount doing part time translation jobs. ^^
