Fall In Love at First Bite!
In Twilight, Robert Pattinson plays a 107-year-old good vampire who falls in love with Bella Swan, the klutzy but endearing new girl in the sleepy town of Forks. Their story is one of the irresistible romance and exciting suspense as Edward tries his best to protect Bella – from dangers she seemts to attract and, most of all, from himself as he painfully resists drinking her blood.
Ok! (magazine) interview with Rob Pattinson:
Was it intimidating to play Edward, a character already loved by so many?
Yeah, it is intimidating. It’s strange when it’s not completely new and fresh. It’s your own interpretation and then other people make of it what they think of it. It’s always going to be a little more difficult… You think there are constraints and you have to kind of fight against that.
What do you like about playing Edward?
I like the fact that he’s sort of a hero character that so violently denies that he’s in any way a hero at any point, even when he does heroic acts. He’s very humble.
What was your favourite scene to film?
I quite liked doing the scene right in the beginning when I’m talking to the high school administrator. This woman had just com in and she was only working for one day so I could just basically say whatever I wanted to her to intimidate her and that was quite fun abusing somebody when I didn’t have to have any repercussions because I’d never see them again. [Laughs] That actually probably was the best day!
Have there been any crazy Twilight fans on the set?
The Twilight fans seem very scared of approaching (the cast). I guess that’s quite sweet. They’re so respectful. They’re all sort of just watching. They just stand there and wait to be asked if they want a photo or something. I guess it was quite funny when there were like three 10-year old girls and the security people were like, “Are you okay?” [laughs]
Do you wish you had any of the Cullen family’s vampires abilities in real life?
I’d like to have a super jumping ability. That would be quite cool if I could jump really high. I’d be jumping around all the time. [Though] I’d probably get bored with it after a while.
Can you describe each of your costars in one word?
Nikki [Reed, plays Rosalie] is quite forthright. Kellan [Lutz, plays Emmett] is…[laughs]…it’s always going to be a double-edged sword because the person is like, “What, you think I’m funny?” Kristen, I don’t know. I can’t describe her in one word. Just working with Kristen, it’s nice to work with someone who you can see what they’re going to become. She’s going to be the biggest star. [Laughs] Everything I say is really over complimentary, but she is, though, she’s really, really good. She’s been good in everything she’s done, which is really weird because she’s really young. She’s a lot better than I am. It’s kind of embarrassing. I can’t even look her in the eyes in scenes any more. I try to find excuses.
What the biggest difference between the film and the book?
Well, what I try to do, because it’s all from Bella’s perspective in the book, so I kind of tried to read the book from Edward’s perspective. It’s a guy through the eyes of someone who is completely, obsessively in love with him. There’s very little that he actually does in reality that is unclouded by her feelings. I just try to make a reality about it and take it to how he seems himself. I think he sees himself as a piece of s***. It’s hopefully more balanced.
Why is your character in love with her?
It’s just a guy who has nothing in his life at all and all he wants to do is become a human or die. Then you get this kid who initially threatens to destroy everything. It kind of gives you the ultimatum, are you going to pretend to be a vampire still ore are you going to have the most satisfying experience which would be killing this girl. So he has to go through that whole moral quandary. It’s a series of mistakes. He keeps sort of testing himself with the girl and then realizes he can feel life again through this girl. It fulfills every single need in him but at the same time he wants to kill her all of the time -which is interesting.
Did Twilight author Stephenie Meyer give you any insight into Edward?
Yeah, she gave me the semi-finished manuscript from when she wrote Twilight from Edward’s perspective as well. So I read that and I’ve done a lot of work on it before she gave it to me. But it was helpful for me. Just the amount of violence that goes through his head, which isn’t in Twilight at all, which you can see. The first chapter has a lot of that, event eh other guys who look at Bella, he wants to kill them, too. [Laughs] The guy is completely nuts! But it’s kinda cool I tried to incorporate that into the character a little bit.
How old were you when you decided to be an actor?
I started doing plays when I was about fifteen or sixteen. I was just backstage. I only did it because my dad saw a bunch of pretty girls in a restaurant and he asked them where they came from and they said drama group. He said, “Son, this is where you need to go.”
Are there any actors that you really admire?
Jack Nicholson, definitely. I don’t really aspire to be him, actually, but if I could be anyone (it would be him). I used to try and be him professionally in everything I did. I watched One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest which I was thirteen and it’s kind of stuck with me.
