Are free hosting solutions on a down trend?

Saturday Jul 24, 2010

With storage and bandwidth costs getting cheaper and computing power doubling almost every year. Web hosting companies are now able to accommodate more people on their machines at a lower cost. This is of course a welcome trend for the people who do the telecommute to work.

Gone are the days were paid web hosting was reserved for businesses or people with money; while the rest of us subscribe to free services such as Geocities, SpacePorts, Freedom2Surf and the like. Today even students can afford their own webhost on their allowance and still have money for personal expenses.

With that in mind, do free web host companies still have a market share? Or are they slowly fading into obscurity. Casual everyday folk use social networking sites as their primary means of establishing their online identity while people who are serious about their online identity get paid hosting and social networking sites as well; which leaves a smaller market share for the free webhosting companies. Add to that, the trend of online advertising is leaning more towards social networking sites which having a wider reach.
