As Precious as Common Salt

Wednesday Jan 21, 2009

saltOne of my favorite textbook story was about a young Princess who was disowned by his father (King) because she compared him to a common salt. This Princess is his favorite daughter because she is very smart. One day, while the King is dining with his guests, he called for his daughters one by one and asked them how much He means to them. The first and second one said (as far as I can remember), “You are precious to me like all the gold, jewelries that I have in my jewelry box… (all the luxurious things you can think of during that time)…etc”.

The King turned red when he heard what the youngest and smartest had to say, “…My king is as Precious as a common Salt”. He was so furious because of great embarrassment disowning his daughter in front of the guests.

This young Princess then left the Palace and waited for the chance to prove his father what she meant. The day came when her father visited his friend in another kingdom, where the young Princess employed herself as a cook. She prepared all her father’s favorite meal, and guess what, she didn’t put Salt.

The King was delighted to see the festive table filled with his favorite food. Again, he became furious when he tasted the food. The King’s brethren was of course disgraced and called of his servants. The King realized that it was her daughter who cooked the bland meal.

The King realized now what his daughter Princess meant by being Precious as a Common Salt… She really is smart, don’t you think?

Common Salt is Precious. It has lots of use to us that we don’t realize:
Around the House

In the Kitchen

In the Laundry

  • Clean your iron’s metal soleplate
  • Make a quick pre-treatment
  • Remove perspiration stains
  • Set the Colour in new towels
  • In the Garden
  • Stop weeds in their tracks
  • Rid your garden of snails and slug
  • Clean flowerpots without water

In the Bath

  • As Pre-shampoo Dandruff Treatment
  • Condition your skin
  • A salt Rubdown
  • Freshen your Breath
  • Open half-clogged drains
  • Remove spots on bath Enamel

Salt Shakers

  • Cut back on Sugar
  • Use as a Cinnamon/sugar dispenser
  • Use for flour dusting
  • Dry fertilizer in a salt shaker

Watching my mother, I have tried some of those “uses of salt” and still amazed how it actually work. I’m also a fan of Baking Soda Powder used as Cleaning agent.

Very nice and inspiring post I must say. :)

Three things I learned:

1.) Don’t take things for granted.

- We often neglect or take for granted the simple things in life just like a common salt. We won’t appreciate it until it’s gone and had made our life bland.

2.) Try to analyze things first before reacting.

- There times when we just can’t seem to understand because our perception is too shallow. This may cause misunderstandings that could result to broken relationships. Perhaps it’s just a matter of lack of analysis, What we heard is what we heard. We didn’t give it a shot to digest the information first.

3.) Never underestimate yourself.

- Even as little as a salt can make a lot of difference. With our size, can’t we make more difference?

Thanks!

It reminds me of a question I heard the other day “Which would you rather be allergic to; salt or cotton?” after reading this, I’d say cotton.

A very clever story there, and quite true. It’s the people who are around us everyday who we tend to take for granted, and only when they are gone do we realize their importance in our lives.

i used to work for a salt industry.. it was my very first job. and indeed, salt is of great importance. did you know that the amniotic fluid that protects our babies inside our womb is composed mainly of salt?
