Heinrich Rudolf Hertz is known to be the pioneer in broadcasting and first to receive radio waves. Thanks to his brilliant mind because it served as the foundation for television, radio and radar. To give honor to him, the unit frequency of a radio wave was named after him. The radio wave which is once cycle per second is called Hertz.
It was in late 1880’s when he was able to prove the existence of radio waves. Hertz used two rods which served as the receiver plus a spark gap to be his receiving antennae. Whenever waves are picked up, a spark would jump; this experiment showed that the signals received have the properties of electromagnetic waves.
Unfortunately, Heinrich Rudolf Hertz died at a young age of 36 in 1894. He was diagnosed with an illness known as Wegener’s granulomatosis. His remain was buried in Ohlsdorf, Hamburg in a Jewish cemetery. Despite his death, his legacy remains.
