Do not be surprised if you will see a giant zipper running down on Google’s homepage. Today is the birthday of the person behind the invention of zipper. Gideon Sundback is an electrical engineer and he is the one responsible for the fastening device used in the clothing industry. The idea of developing a fastening device had been thought of a lot of engineers but no one ever perfected the idea.
What he did was to put a dimple on each underside of the interlocking tooth and a nib was placed on top in order to secure it. He was also the one who manufactured the machine that would create the new zipper. By the year 1909, he began to work with Universal Fastener Company in New Jersey. He became the head designer of this company. In the year 1930, zipper became a common feature on almost all dresses and trousers.
This Swedish-American inventor was born April 24, 1880 in Sweden. In 1905, his family immigrated to United States and he started to work at Westinghouse Electric Manufacturing Company. The company was located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Gideon Sundback died in 1954 due to failing heart condition. He was laid to rest in Greendale Cemetery in Pennsylvania.
